My Family

I grew up on the reservation with my mother, father, two brothers, and two sisters,. My siblings were annoying at times, but I missed them almost as much as I missed my parents when I was at war, and the day I got home was the happiest day of my life.

Hardships
Living on the reservation wasn't easy, and still isn't easy today. The reservation is located on semi-desert land, which made farming difficult. We also didn't have many of the modern conveniences that white people did, including electricity, phones, and plumbing.
A letter home
March 28, 1945
Dear Mother, Father, Katherine, Lillian, Austin, and Joshua,
I have missed you these past few weeks, more than ever before. I know that life here is dangerous, and I suppose that you are right to worry, but I do not want your worry to consume you. I don't really fight in battle anyway, so the danger of me being killed is less than it would be if I wasn't a Code Talker. I have been very busy, especially these past few days. The battle of Iwo Jima was difficult to win, but even though the Japanese are very dangerous, I knew that even if we did not win the battle, we would win the war, because we are Americans, and America has never lost a war.
Many predicted that Iwo Jima would be the hardest battle to win in the war, and that once it was captured, the end of the war would not be far behind. Now Iwo Jima is captured, so hopefully soon I will be able to return home to you.
Please write me back soon and tell me about life on the reservation. Also, please try not to worry too much about me. I feel almost certain that the worst of the danger is past, at least for the Americans (the Japanese will have much more hardship to come) and I survived that, so I am fairly sure that I will survive to return home.
Hope to see you soon,
Ralph
